This seminar will help you improve vocabulary, streamline process and gain confidence when treating child clients who have Spanish-Speaking parents.
Many therapists start out working with Spanish-speaking families when they are assigned an English-speaking child who may have parents who need to speak Spanish in session. This workshop helps therapists structure those initial contacts with the Spanish-speaking parent of a child client, build rapport and gather the needed information to start the treatment process.
La Llamada Inicial – The Initial Phone Call to a Child’s Parent
Part One: Become more confident making that first phone call to your client's parent to arrange for a consultation. Learn vocabulary and phrases for three types of situations: therapist leaves a message on recorder, therapist speaks to someone other than the client, therapist speaks to client directly.
Rapport Building and Symptom Relief - Personalismo y Desahogarse
Part Two covers the ways to implement cultural constructs Desahogarse and Personalismo in the initial sessions with the parent of your child client. Included in this module: rapport building, provide symptom relief, gather a history, formulate diagnostic impressions, psycho-education.
Psycho-Education - Psicología y Educación
Learn a model for explaining things and providing recommendations in Part Three. This is helpful when you need to explain something, and then give a piece of advice or direction (Consejo). For example, if you need to tell your client about a diagnosis such as, "Your child is suffering from anxiety." The module provides examples of ways to provide simple explanations of different things that may be going on, and general therapist statements to help the parent improve understanding and coping skills.
Consejos – Professional Recommendation
Part Four: This module covers using the imperative tense to give a variety of professional recommendations to a parent. The construct of Consejos in Latin America suggests that clients often expect a mental health professional to provide concrete and useful advice in order to feel that the therapy is a worthwhile investment.
You will receive:
Four-part video series to practice interventions before the seminar and keep for your reference.
Opportunity to role play with Alfonso any interventions you want to use with Latino families.
Parking validation inside studio facility.
