Module 1: Presentarse - Introducing Yourself

Beginner to Advanced

  1. Pronounce in Spanish at least four titles or names of mental health professionals.
  2. Pronounce how to introduce yourself correctly and professionally in at least four different contexts.
  3. Able to pronounce in Spanish at least four different types of 'counselors' in Latin America.
  4. Pronounce in Spanish at least four disciplines within the mental health professions.


Covers: How to get started both linguistically and culturally with your Spanish speaking client. This video covers the following concepts: saying hello, welcoming the client, terapeuta o terapista, therapist vocabulary, cultural issue Personalismo.


Examples of introductions for psychologists, social workers, psychiatrists, mental health professionals. Beginners can benefit from learning basic vocabulary and hearing pronunciation. Advanced speakers make sure you're using correct terms, conjugations, vocabulary and cultural assumptions. Prepare for common scenarios so you have the right sentence on the tip of your tongue.


Module 2: Desahogarse - Un-Drowning Person Centered Intervention

  1. Pronounce at least one therapist statement in Spanish to explain therapy to a client.
  2. Pronounce at least two statements in Spanish a therapist could use to establish the frame of therapy with a new client.
  3. Pronounce at least three active reflective listening statements in Spanish a therapist could use.
  4. Pronounce 'Can you give me some examples?' in Spanish.


In this module you will learn how to practice active- reflective listening, and conduct a culturally congruent Person-Centered Counseling Intervention, as well as to gather elements of a history. Learn therapist statements and phrases which enable your client to release pent-up stress and to feel 'heard', and to allow you as the therapist to gather information for assessment and treatment options.


Your client will be very appreciative when you give him the opportunity to 'Desahogarse' as part of therapy sessions. If a doubtful new client asks, "¿Para qué es esta terapia? The therapist can reply, "Una parte de la terapia es desahogarse." Then the client will understand what is expected. That the therapist wants him to open up and just start talking about what's going on, and how he may have tried to cope or fix so far. 


Hispanic clients may not automatically understand that you want them just to open up and start talking. Clients may be expecting a certain procedure or questions or other methods. So when you let them know, "La terapia es para desahogarse" they will understand more about how the therapeutic process works, and will engage more confidently. 


In this valuable and simple lesson you will learn to provide the intervention of Desahogarse through open-ended phrases and language. This intervention also allows you as the therapist to demonstrate full and empathic comprehension of the presenting problems.


Module 3: Repetir y Aclarar - Repeat and Clarify

  5. Practice at least ten new clinical Spanish vocabulary words


Be prepared with the correct tenses and phrases for occasions when you don't understand exactly what your client just said. Learn how to extricate yourself professionally from this common situation while developing rapport and providing meaningful clinical interventions.


Module 4: Reflejar Sentimientos - Reflecting Feeling

  2. Pronounce at least two Therapist Reflecting Feeling Statement using the verb 'Sentirse' to provide active reflective listening

  4. Practice the cultural concept of Confianza.
  5. Learn at least five new vocabulary words in clinical Spanish.


In this module you will learn the correct vocabulary for identifying feelings. You will also build reflecting statements with verb conjugations for Reflecting Feelings which is a common psychotherapeutic intervention. You will also practice staying congruent with the usted form in your statements and questions.


Module 5: Hacer La Cita - Making the Appointment

  1. Pronounce at least two ways to make an appointment in Spanish.
  2. Pronounce the days of the week and months of the year in Spanish
  3. Pronounce various times and dates for making an appointment in Spanish.
  4. Pronounce at least two ways to tell your client what time their appointment is.


This module helps you with setting up, canceling and changing appointments. It also provides a review of the hours of the day, days of the week, months of the year, calendar numbers, etc to enable you to talk about and set up the next appointment.


Module 6: Concluir La Sesión - Concluding the Session

  1. Pronounce at least five statements in Spanish a therapist can use to close the session.
  2. Pronounce how to say goodbye to a client
  3. Pronounce at least five new clinical Spanish vocabulary words


Use this video to learn phrases for winding down and closing the session. Practice "We are almost out of time for today," and more statements and phrases to do a good job closing smoothly and addressing client concerns at the end of a session.


Module 7: Taking Your Client's Personal Information

Module 8: Llenar los Papeles: Seguros - Filling out Paperwork: Insurance

  5. Explain in Spanish what the client should do in an emergency.


In this module you will learn the vocabulary necessary for obtaining information commonly found on an Intake Form. You will also build questions to enable you to gather the necessary information.


Module 9: Llenar los Papeles: Asuntos Financieros - Filling out Paperwork Financial Issues

Module 10: Llenar los Papeles: Confidencialidad - Filling out Paperwork Confidentiality
